One of the hardest things for me to do is to share where I might need help. I think this stems from the belief that I was hired to do a job and if I cannot complete something it might reflect poorly on me. But what I have realized is that sometimes there are problems that can only be solved with the help of others. Leaning on others is important because they might be strong in an area that weakens you. Having a conversation with your team leader is often times a discussion about how we can be stronger together.

I have an employee who seems to be disconnected between what she thinks she can do well and what she actually does well. What she lists as her strengths actually presents as one of her weaknesses. How do I manage a conversation around that?

That is an amazing question! I’m going to submit it for a potential One Thing You Need to Know episode. That definitely deserves it’s own post.

When I used to work for a company that used ‘teamspace’ and ‘Standout’, those questions were quite useful to understand how one would play out their strength. This allowed me to assign projects that aligns to their strength, the result was a win/win all the time. I was able to turn around a low performer through targeted strength based assignment. Thank you, MB for your inspirational work in the field.
