Defining Strengths

If you’ve ever struggled with applying your strengths in the world, or wondered if you even had any strengths. If you’ve ever questioned what your strengths are, or built a career around something that you’re good at, but don’t necessarily enjoy. If you haven’t expressed your unique voice in the world through work – it’s not your fault.

So much of this anxiety and fear and unhappiness is because we don’t value our strengths the way we should. And the first step to valuing them starts with defining them. A strength is not what you are good at, and a weakness is not what you are bad at. Share on X

A strength is not what you are good at, and a weakness is not what you are bad at.

A strength is an activity that strengthens you. It draws you in, it makes time fly by while you’re doing it, and it makes you feel strong.

And if you define a strength that way then the person best qualified to determine your strengths is you. You are the authority on which activities you lean into. You are the authority on which activities make you feel energized. Somebody else can judge your performance, or the quality and quantity of your work – but you, and you alone, can recognize your strengths. You, and you alone, can recognize and identify your strengths. Share on X

The other implication of this definition is that it means everyone has strengths. Every single person in the world has got certain situations, activities, tasks, or people that invigorate them – and these strengths are just as unique and diverse as the people who hold them.

So, now that you know the definition of a strength, it’s time to start taking responsibility for yours; because being able to identify your strengths is the first step in offering them out to the world.

This is so true. It actually resonates with me as a values-based approach … values being the things that energize us, engage us, and put the wind in our sails! For children as well as adults, knowing and living into our values is such an empowering way to live and contribute.

Thank you, Marcus, for the work that you do. You help us know and understand how to help ourselves, encourage those around us, and equip the next generation, so that they won’t end up 20+ years down a path that was good but not great.
