If you are dealing with an employee who is late or absent, always start with the questions, “Are you okay?” and “How can I help?” Approach the conversation with curiosity and caring, and then move to a strategy to help the person get to work on time. It’s like the difference between coaching versus feedback; start on their side of the fence and approach the situation with genuine caring and concern.
